Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
The introduction of ‘Awaab’s Law’ in early 2024 highlighted the importance of tackling mould. It’s essential to keep both your tenants safe, as well as keeping your staff safe when carrying out mould remediation. Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) can protect workers when working around mould and within hazardous environments.
Selecting the correct Respiratory Protective Equipment and adhering to safety standards are essential steps for protecting workers and maintaining a safe work environment in the presence of hazardous substances.
RPE can fall under one of several EN Standards. These standards define degrees of protection and the types of dangers labelled equipment has been tested to perform well against.

In early 2024, the government introduced ‘Awaab’s Law’ within the Social Housing (Regulation) Bill.
This represented a massive shift in the responsibilities of landlords, especially in social housing. The law requires action be taken within a set timeframe when damp or mould is reported. These rules allow tenants to hold landlords accountable by law if they fail to provide a decent home.
To find out more about what this change in legislation means for housing associations, and how the introduction of PWS’ Mould Kits can help to protect your staff, read our Mould Management Health & Safety Update.
Working with our housing association customers, we have supported them to keep their staff safe when carrying out mould remediation with expert advice on respiratory equipment, as well as our specialist mould kits.
Many of the chemicals used during the removal of mould, including chlorine, produce harmful gases. It is, therefore, essential for employers to provide their staff with appropriate respiratory equipment, as well as implementing measures to mitigate exposure to harmful gases. You can read more about safe mould remediation by clicking here.
The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations requires all employers provide their workers with adequate PPE. This extends to ensuring equipment be suitable for the individual, including sizing and fit.
Correct fit of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is vital in ensuring the protection level isn’t affected. A loose mask can allow hazardous substances to enter.
Fit may change over time so it is important to carry out fit checks throughout the life of a product. Click here to learn more about fit testing for RPE.
